Thailand | Foto: Benedetta Großrubatscher In Bangkok there's a street in the city center that's the meeting-point for all those traveling through Asia: here they can take a break from the challenges of their trips or find all the things they need to keep on going.

Thailand is a place that resides somewhere between the Orient and the Occident: its clean streets and fuchsia-colored taxis make me think of a kind of Asian Switzerland.

There are huge images of the king on every corner. The temples with their golden Buddhas, reclining Buddhas and Lucky Buddhas invite you to stop for a moment and simply enjoy the trip itself, the flowers, the smells. No doubt about it, Thailand is a place where it's easy to travel.

My travel partner is sick, so I often go out alone. At Koh Samui I become friends with James, a real «Aussteiger» (one of those German words that's so difficult to translate: a person who has cut all ties with «normal» society, in English we'd call him a «dropout»). One day he left England to come live in a bungalow on a Thai island. Every now and again he works. He explains to me that he is a «navigator»: when companies look for gas deposits they need someone to go down to probe and so he ends up in a container for a few months on site, then he goes back to his island. He's an old hippie who has managed to find his place here and this makes me think that anything is possible: existing without too many ties, working just a few months out of the year, living in a bungalow on the beach. He's managed to do what a lot of people only dream about.
